The second stop for us was Athens. Typically, Danny and I prefer island time over city time when we travel, so we only stayed here for a full day and night. Also, everyone we spoke to said that was all we would need. And they were right, it was the perfect amount of time to see the Acropolis and the central city of Athens.
It’s sweltering in Athens during the summer months. So walking around a city of concrete and marble in the peak of a day is not easy. What we did to get through it, and what I highly recommend, is rent Segways. We were able to see so much of the city in just a few hours. We rented them from ‘Athens Segway Tours.’
You can’t go in the actual Acropolis with a Segway but we used them to see everything else and then when the sun was setting, and it was so much more bearable to walk around the inside of the Acropolis. Seeing the sunset surrounded by the beautiful ruins was breathtaking.
After the sunset, we went to dinner. We found a restaurant called Liondi from Trip Advisor that was very close to the main center and had great reviews. We are always wary about going to any restaurant close to a main tourist attraction; however, the food was so authentic, and we had the greatest time there. The owner used to be a chef at a restaurant in Astoria. So when we told him we were from Queens, he was super excited. He kept coming up to us to chat. He actually stopped and talked with everyone at the restaurant. There’s nothing better than a personable restaurant owner.
We ordered a massive Greek salad to share and Tsziki that was amazing. I got a shrimp dish, and Danny got chicken souvlaki that was also superb. The owner brought us over a free carafe of wine and dessert at the end of the meal, which was delicious and the perfect ending to a great experience.
During our trip, we stayed in a really lovely and spacious Airbnb. It was about a 15-minute walk from the Acropolis and away from the crowds.
A few days after we left, Athens endured a massive wildfire that took almost 100 lives. My heart goes out to those lives lost and affected.

Can’t wait for the next episode
